Confucius Penrhos College Engages with China

On 18th Nov, in the tele-conference room of Penrhos College, some junior schoolgirls were excitedly making self-introduction in Chinese and performing the Chines folk song “Jasmine Flower” and ancient Chinese poems to the students on the big screen, who were at Jingdu Primary School in Hangzhou China. In response, the Chinese students sang “You are My Sunshine” in English. This tele-interaction between the students of Penrhos College and Jingdu Primary School was part of the school’s engaging Asia initiative. In October 2014, Ms Trish Somers, Head of Junior School Head joined the WA principal delegation to visit Hangzhou and started the sister-school relationship with Jingdu Primary School, which provides a good opportunity for the students of both schools to broaden their cross-cultural awareness.

In Term 2, with the support of Confucius Institute UWA, the junior school started Chinese Cross Cultural classes and 180 girls have picked up some knowledge of Chinese language and culture, including greeting phrases, calligraphy, paper cutting and martial arts, and so on. At the Junior School Asian Inspired Art Exhibition in October, the girls’ artwork and performance received great applause of the parents, teachers and visitors. The success of the cross cultural program is believed to be solid basis for the prospective formal Chinese language program in the school.
