2016 “Hanyu Qiao” (Chinese Bridge) Chinese Proficiency Competition (HYQ) for WA secondary school students concluded successfully on the 28th May 2016. It was held at The Confucius Institute at The University of Western Australia (UWACI) with 13 contestants from different secondary schools in Perth and Geraldton delivering speeches on “Learn Chinese, Double Your World”. For the first time the Year 9 Chinese Speaking Competition was combined with the Hanyu Qiao and 5 Year 9 students gave speeches afterwards.
At the opening ceremony, Ms Eva Chye, UWACI board member, gave a welcome speech, praising the enthusiasm and achievements of Australian young people in learning Chinese language as well as the efforts that UWACI has made in support of Chinese language learning in WA. Afterwards, Boonie Woo, President of Chinese Language Teachers’ Association of WA (CLTAWA) spoke highly of the collaboration of UWACI and CLTAWA in co-organizing the competition for school students, which offered a good learning opportunity for both teachers and students involved. Both speakers wished the contestants good luck in the competition.
The competition consisted of three components: a written test, unscripted speech in Chinese and Chinese cultural performance. Contestants talked about their interesting experience in learning Chinese and making friends. During their amazing cultural shows, they won applause from the audience. Performances included a shadow puppet show, Chinese comedy, Chinese pop songs and dance performances as well as many others!
