On November 30, 2017 the Confucius Institute of UWA, the Chinese Language Teachers’ Association of WA and the Australia China Friendship Society of WA gathered together to celebrate the year’s achievements and  to reluctantly farewell esteemed colleague and friend, Associate Director Chu Xianhua.

Early next year Chu Laoshi, as he is widely known,  will return to China after more than five years in WA.  The farewell event was a chance to honour and thank him not only for his time with us, but also for his lifetime of achievement as a much admired and respected language teacher and cultural ambassador both in his home country and abroad.

To mark the occasion, the Chinese Language Teachers’ Association presented Chu Laoshi with an inaugural Appreciation Award.  In addition, the Confucius Institute presented Chu Laoshi with a special appreciation gift – a framed copy of a full page newspaper article focussed on his life and work in WA.  The article was published in the 29 November 2017 edition of the Australian Chinese Times (p38).

The evening was a great success.  The 88 guests included dignitaries, teachers,  colleagues, Chinese community members and friends from all walks of life. The event was attended by Mr Iain Watt, PVC International, UWA; Deputy Consul General Ms Sun Anlin and Consul Mr He Yifan, People’s Republic of China in Perth; A/Prof Sun Fangjiao, Deputy Dean of International College, Zhejiang University;  Prof Barry Marshall, UWA Nobel Laureate; Ms Jieqi Zhang, President, Chinese Language Teachers’ Association WA; Ms Nancy Chen, President, Australia China Friendship Society of WA; Mr David Ambrose, former Director of CI at UWA; and Mr Geoffrey Davis AM – CLTAWA Founding Member and CI Honorary Fellow.
